Pick a public place. Bring a phone or a pencil. Give yourselves 30 to 45 minutes to notice the things you normally walk past.
This is our original activity for adults, designed for a solo wander, a couple or a small group. It needs no app, purchase, hidden objects or registration. You can use the complete list below or download the printable sheet.

Choose your setting, group size and creative difficulty. We'll make a fresh list from our original observation prompts. This is a standalone website tool. It doesn't use your location, camera or photos.
Take a screenshot or copy the list before leaving. Use one point per completed challenge, with no speed bonus. Read the access and privacy rules below and skip any unsuitable prompt. Your choices are processed in your browser by this tool.
Set it up in five minutes
- Choose a small, publicly accessible area that suits everyone. Check opening hours, weather and local rules.
- Agree on a meeting spot and finish time. Stay together if the area is unfamiliar.
- Play solo, in pairs or in teams of two to four. One phone per team is enough. A written description can replace any photo.
- Pick any eight challenges from the twelve below. Skip anything unavailable or unsuitable.
- Stop safely for each photo. No speed points, trespassing, collecting wildlife or approaching strangers.
The twelve challenges
- A surprising shadow. Find a shape that looks like something else.
- Three shades of green. Show them in one frame without moving or picking plants.
- A repeating pattern. Look for rhythm in paving, fences or leaves.
- Old beside new. Capture two details that suggest different eras.
- A tiny landscape. Frame a small, reachable detail so it looks like a big scene.
- A useful sign. Find public information that taught you something. Avoid personal details.
- A natural frame. Use a safe opening between branches or structures to frame a view.
- A quiet reflection. Photograph from a path or other safe position. Do not approach water edges.
- Something repaired. Spot evidence that an object has been cared for.
- A curve and a straight line. Put both in one picture.
- A place to pause. Find a public resting spot and describe what you notice there.
- Your overlooked detail. Choose something you would have missed without the hunt.
Score the observations, not the speed
Award one point for each of your eight chosen challenges and one extra point for a thoughtful explanation of each find. That makes a maximum of 16 points. Use a different photo or description for each challenge. Finish by sharing your favourite discovery. There is no need for a winner.
Ways to adapt it
- For couples: choose four prompts each, then compare what caught your attention.
- For friends: give every team the same eight prompts and compare interpretations at the end.
- For limited mobility: use one accessible public space and reduce the search area. Make descriptions as valuable as photos.
- For hot or wet weather: shorten or postpone the outing. An indoor adaptation needs the venue's permission and photography rules.
Keep the place as you found it
Stay on permitted paths, keep exits clear and leave plants, animals and objects untouched. Avoid identifiable strangers, children, number plates and private homes in your pictures. Ask teammates before photographing or sharing their image. Skip any prompt that would require unsafe access or disturbance.
Australian summer edition
Australian Christmas scavenger hunt for adults
Keep the party small, find some shade and try a Christmas hunt that doesn't depend on snow or winter decorations. This original pack combines six object clues with six photo or sketch challenges. Allow about 20-30 minutes for 2-12 adults in teams of two to four. Timing is an estimate and you can take longer.

Two A4 pages: player sheet and scorecard, plus a host answer sheet. No email gate. The existing general PDF and photo generator above are still available.
Set it up
The host supplies a sunhat, water bottle, picnic rug, reusable plate, wrapped gift and paper star. Use things you own, an empty wrapped box, or hand-drawn pictures instead. Put them in an agreed area with permission. This is a matching hunt: players do not open, take or move the objects. The host keeps the answers out of view and reads the rules first.
Six original summer clues
- I make a little roof that travels wherever your head goes.
- Fill me before the fun begins; my job is to carry your next sip.
- Unfold me and a patch of ground becomes the place where everyone can sit.
- I carry lunch today and can come back for the next picnic instead of going in the bin.
- My outside keeps a secret until someone opens me.
- Cut me from paper with points all around; I can sparkle in spirit without needing a plug.
Host answers: open after playing
1. Sunhat. 2. Water bottle. 3. Picnic rug. 4. Reusable plate. 5. Wrapped gift. 6. Paper star. Accept equivalent answers agreed by the host, such as a drink bottle.
Six photo or sketch challenges
- Two festive colours. Find red and green in one frame without moving plants or other people's belongings.
- Summer shade. Show how your group has made a comfortable place to pause. No people need to be in the picture.
- A tiny celebration. Arrange three items you own into a small festive scene, then put them away.
- A gift without a price. Write or sketch an act of kindness you could offer. Photograph or describe the note.
- An unexpected star. Make a star shape with pencils or strips of scrap paper on your own table.
- The last postcard. Create a final image, sketch or written description of your gathering and add a five-word caption.
Score it without a race
Give one point for each correctly matched clue (maximum 6). Each creative challenge earns one point for meeting the prompt and one for an explanation (maximum 12). Total possible: 18 points per team. Written descriptions and sketches count equally with photographs. Share ties and skip any prompt that is unsuitable.
Make the summer version work
Use a backyard, a venue-approved picnic area or an indoor space with permission. Keep clues within the agreed boundary and away from roads, water, barbecues and private property. Don't hide anything in nature or require food handling. Take breaks, provide water and change plans for heat, rain or storms. Photograph consenting teammates only, or leave people out entirely. This pack is for adults and is a standalone website activity, not a released app feature.
