About Robin Hood Tech

Robin Hood Tech is an Australian toll reform campaign and technology project founded by Adam Littlefield in Brisbane, Queensland.

We examine what road tolls cost, how unpaid tolls are enforced, and who is accountable when the system gets something wrong. We want ordinary motorists to be able to find a clear answer before a small charge becomes a much bigger problem.

We’re also developing ideas for safe, interactive technology using computer vision and artificial intelligence. That work is still in development. This website is where we share the campaign, the research and updates on the project.

Why Adam started it

Adam’s own experience challenging Queensland toll enforcement pushed him to look more closely at the system behind a toll notice.

A few dollars for using a road can turn into an invoice, a formal Demand Notice and, in some circumstances, a government infringement. Each step has different rules and consequences. It should be easy for someone to understand what they’ve received and what they can do about it.

That’s why Robin Hood Tech publishes plain-English guides alongside its campaign for change. If you’ve received a notice, start with our guide to Queensland toll notices. The document in your hands and its deadline still matter.

What we’re asking

Roads need to be built and maintained. Motorists also deserve clear answers about the charges placed on them.

How long will a road be tolled? What pays for maintenance? Who receives the revenue? What happens when someone disputes a charge or cannot pay it? Those questions should not require weeks of digging through contracts, notices and legislation.

Our Queensland Parliament petition, Remove Profit-Driven Tolling from Queensland Roads, asks for a review of long-term tolling and enforcement on essential commuter roads. Queensland residents can read the petition in full and sign it on Parliament’s website.

The concern reaches beyond one toll road. We’re also writing about the way taxes, fees and rising prices land on the same household, often during an ordinary trip to work.

We distinguish published facts from our arguments for reform. For example, the High Court’s decision in Vanderstock v Victoria raised significant questions about a particular road-use charge. It did not decide that every Australian toll road is unlawful. Read our explanation of Vanderstock and follow the original decision if you want to examine the legal argument.

The technology work

Robin Hood Tech is exploring location-based digital experiences using computer vision and AI. Safety is central to that work: interactions are intended for approved locations, with no prompts asking people to use a phone while driving.

We’ll share what has actually been built and tested as the project develops.
