By Robin Hood Tech · Location information checked 1 November 2026
A garden in the middle of the city. Twelve things to notice. Choose eight and make a small adventure out of an ordinary visit.
We've written this free, self-guided photo hunt for adults visiting Brisbane's City Botanic Gardens. Play solo, as a couple or with up to six friends. You can use a phone, sketches or written observations. There's no app to install, no hidden object to collect and no registration needed.

The plan at a glance
| Detail | Our suggested setup |
|---|---|
| Who | 1-6 adults. For four or more, try pairs with the same eight prompts. |
| Time | Allow roughly 45-60 minutes, including the final chat. This is a planning estimate, not a measured route time. |
| Area | City Botanic Gardens. Choose a small area of open public paths that suits your group. There is no required distance or fixed loop. |
| Bring | Water, weather protection, the sheet or page, and a phone or pencil. A camera is optional. |
| Score | Eight different observations, up to two points each. Maximum 16. No speed bonus. |
Where to meet and what to check
We suggest agreeing to meet at the Alice Street entrance near Albert Street, then choosing your own short wander inside the gardens. Council lists this entrance, along with Edward Street and other access points. Its current visitor page lists the gardens as open 24 hours, with separate hours for individual facilities. For this activity, choose daylight.
Council lists toilets, accessible toilets, drinking water and wheelchair access. Use its City Botanic Gardens visitor information and mobility map to choose facilities and paths for your needs. Published access information is not a guarantee that every path or facility is available on the day.
Keep the search compact. Weeping Fig Avenue and the Riverwalk are optional areas described by Council; neither is compulsory. Do not enter Riverstage, a booked area, garden beds or any closed section to finish a prompt. An organised function may need a booking: check Council's current site-hire guidance before inviting a larger group.
Your 12 original photo prompts
Choose eight before starting. Complete them in any order and use a different observation for each. If a prompt doesn't work where you are, swap it for another from the list.
- City meets garden. Frame a city building and a garden detail together from a permitted path.
- One canopy, two shapes. Find two different leaf silhouettes without picking or touching the plants.
- A name worth noticing. Read a public plant or heritage label. Record one word and what it made you notice.
- Shade has a pattern. Photograph a shadow pattern from a safe resting spot. No climbing for a better angle.
- The river stays over there. From the public path, capture a river view with a foreground detail. Keep clear of the edge.
- A curve through the city. Find a curved path, railing or branch and frame it with something straight.
- An old detail, a new backdrop. Put a heritage-looking detail and a modern city feature in the same frame. Do not guess their ages.
- A garden without green. Find three colours other than green in one photograph. Leave everything where it is.
- A pause with a view. Choose a permitted resting spot and record three details visible without moving from it.
- Texture without touch. Show two contrasting textures using your camera or a sketch, without handling anything.
- A clue to sharing the place. Find a sign or design feature that helps different visitors use the gardens together.
- Your Brisbane postcard. Make one final image or sketch that sums up the garden inside the city. Add a five-word caption.
How the scoring works
Award one point for a photo, sketch or written observation that meets the prompt, plus one point for explaining what you noticed. Eight completed prompts can earn 16 points. Agree on the interpretation together. If you play in pairs, everyone gets the same number of prompts and time to share.
No one needs to photograph a stranger, find a particular animal or reach a specific landmark. A thoughtful written answer counts just as much as a photograph. Finish by sharing the detail you would normally have missed.
A shorter or quieter version
Choose one resting area and work through four prompts from there. Use descriptions instead of photographs, and skip anything outside comfortable reach. For a couple, each person can choose four prompts and explain their choices afterwards. This is an activity you can adapt, not a test you need to finish.
Before you head out
- Check current weather, Council notices and signs at the gardens. Shorten or postpone the activity in uncomfortable heat, rain or storms.
- Stop in a safe place before looking at your phone or taking a photo. Keep public paths and access points clear.
- Leave plants and wildlife alone. No collecting, feeding, climbing or hiding objects.
- Avoid identifiable strangers, children and private details in pictures. Ask your own group before photographing or sharing them.
- Allow time to reach your agreed finish point. A closure or skipped prompt is a reason to change the plan, not push through.
What we've checked
Location details come from the linked Brisbane City Council visitor information and mobility map, checked on 1 November 2026. The prompts and scoring are our own. We have not field-tested this hunt, measured a route or independently audited accessibility. Recheck the official information before visiting.
