Free outdoor date ideas in Brisbane and Logan

By Robin Hood Tech · Checked 1 November 2026

Choose a place, bring something to talk about and leave enough time to stop. A good date doesn't need a ticket or a packed itinerary.

These are researched suggestions, not reports of our own visits. “Free” means the suggested public-space activity or general entry has no admission charge. Food, parking, transport, venue bookings and ticketed events can add costs. Check official notices before leaving.

Four plans you can make your own

A garden conversation

Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. Choose a short garden circuit, then each pick one plant or view to talk about. Bring water and take breaks rather than trying to see everything.

Entry is free. Council lists 8am to 6pm from September to March and 8am to 5pm from April to August. The gardens are at 152 Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong. Check accessible paths and current notices on the official visitor page.

A riverfront pause

South Bank Parklands. Take a gentle stroll, find a public resting spot and compare three small things you noticed. Bring refreshments from home if that suits your budget; commercial venues are optional.

The parklands are a free visitor attraction. Their conditions of entry list hours of 5am to midnight and require compliance with signs and staff directions. Facilities may have separate hours or closures. Choose a comfortable daylight visit and keep paths clear.

A Logan photo challenge

Logan River Parklands, Beenleigh. Use four prompts from our free scavenger hunt: a pattern, a surprising shadow, three greens and a place to pause. Photograph from a safe path, then share why you chose each image.

Visit Brisbane lists this Blackbird Street park as free. Check current conditions, especially after rain. Keep away from water edges and use a written description when a photograph isn't appropriate.

A local-story walk

A short section of a Logan heritage trail. Pick a few outdoor stops from a council guide, read the stories and imagine what the area looked like earlier. Check the route before you go and leave private or closed sites out.

Council's downloadable heritage guides cover several areas. They are planning resources, not a promise of a continuous footpath or free entry to every building.

Turn “let's go for a walk” into a plan

  1. Choose one area. A compact outing leaves more room to talk than driving between distant attractions.
  2. Agree on comfort. Discuss shade, distance, toilets, seating and access needs before picking the route.
  3. Give it a small theme. Look for a colour, compare favourite views or use four photo prompts.
  4. Set the real budget. Free entry doesn't make parking or a café stop free. Bring what you need and keep purchases optional.
  5. Keep a weather alternative. Shorten or postpone outdoor plans if conditions are poor. Our Logan guide includes free exhibition options with their own hours.

Keep the challenge considerate

Ask before photographing each other. Keep identifiable strangers and private details out of images, stay on permitted paths and leave wildlife alone. There are no points for speed or reaching a difficult location. Our editorial suggestions are not approved Robin Hood pilot sites.
