How Long Do I Have to Pay a Brisbane Toll After Travelling Without a Tag?

Updated October 2026

If you used a Brisbane toll road without a working tag, do not wait for a letter. The cheapest options are usually available during the first few days after travel.

The short answer

• Within 5 days: you can buy a Brisbane Road Pass and backdate it to cover the trip.

• Within 9 days: you can open an eligible prepaid, postpaid or commercial account and backdate it to cover the trip.

• More than 9 days ago: you will generally need to wait for or locate the toll invoice, which includes extra fees.

The 5-day Road Pass window

A Brisbane Road Pass can cover toll travel made during the previous five days. This is usually the simplest option for an occasional trip.

When buying the pass, check that:

• the licence plate is correct

• the vehicle class is correct

• the pass start date reaches back to the travel date

• the payment went through

Keep the receipt or confirmation email.

The 9-day account option

If the trip was made six to nine days ago, Linkt says an eligible account can still be opened and backdated to cover it.

If you already have an account but the vehicle was missing, you may be able to add its licence plate and backdate the vehicle start date. Check that the trip appears and has been charged correctly. Adding a vehicle does not help if the details or start date are wrong.

Why does the 5-day limit differ from the 9-day limit?

They are different payment products.

A Road Pass can be backdated by up to five days. An eligible account can generally cover trips made up to nine days ago on Queensland toll roads. That is why advice saying simply “you have three days” or “you have nine days” can be misleading.

What happens after 9 days?

If the trip is more than nine days old and was not covered by a pass or account, a toll invoice is generally sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Linkt says it can take up to four weeks from the travel date for the invoice to be sent. A recent trip may also take time to appear in the online invoice search.

The invoice will include the unpaid toll and additional fees. Deal with it by the due date printed on the document. If the details are wrong, query or transfer it rather than ignoring it.

What does travelling without a tag cost?

Queensland currently applies a video matching fee when a vehicle travels without a tag or the tag is not detected. Linkt lists the fee as $0.55.

For most Queensland toll roads, it is charged at each toll point. AirportlinkM7 calculates the fee per trip. Fees can change, so check Linkt’s current Brisbane fees page.

What if I had a tag but it did not beep?

Check the account before buying another product. A tag may fail to beep because of its position, battery or account status, but the vehicle plate may still be matched to the account.

Look for:

• the trip in your account

• a low-balance or suspended-account warning

• the correct vehicle registration

• a video matching fee

• an old vehicle still attached to the tag

Rental and work vehicles

Do not assume the invoice will come directly to you. Rental companies and employers may receive it first and add administration charges. Check the rental agreement or speak with the vehicle owner quickly.

What to do now

If you travelled:

• 1 to 5 days ago: buy and correctly backdate a Road Pass, or open an eligible account.

• 6 to 9 days ago: open and correctly backdate an eligible account.

• More than 9 days ago: search for the toll invoice and watch the registered owner’s mail.

Take a screenshot of the completed payment, pass or account details. If a later invoice arrives, that evidence matters.
