Games like Pokémon GO in Australia: three different directions
By Robin Hood Tech · Checked 1 November 2026
What do you want more of: collecting, battles or a reason to explore? The closest alternative depends on which part of Pokémon GO you enjoy.
We've checked publisher information and Australian App Store listings. This is a researched comparison, not a hands-on review or a ranking based on our play experience. An Australian listing confirms a storefront presence, not compatibility with every device or useful game locations in every suburb.
Choose by the part you enjoy
| Game | Main attraction | Cost model | Main difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pikmin Bloom | Growing a collection and marking walks with virtual flowers. | Free to play with optional purchases. | More about walking and collecting than catching Pokémon. |
| Monster Hunter Now | Monster battles, equipment and hunting with others. | Free with in-app purchases. | Combat and crafting replace creature collecting. |
| Ingress | Exploring points of interest and working with a faction. | Free with in-app purchases. | A territory and team strategy focus. |
Pikmin Bloom: for a collection that grows with your walks
Pikmin Bloom connects walking with seedlings, Pikmin and virtual flower trails. It suits the question “What did we discover today?” more than “Which battle did we win?” Optional purchases are available, so decide whether you want to use only the free features before starting.
Read the Nintendo Australia overview and the Australian App Store listing. Check your device's current requirements and step-tracking permissions rather than relying on an old compatibility list.
Monster Hunter Now: for action and equipment progression
Monster Hunter Now puts monsters into a location-based world and centres play on hunts and equipment. The publisher describes solo and group hunting. Choose it if combat is the attraction; don't expect the same collecting loop as Pokémon GO. Stop somewhere safe before any active gameplay.

Ingress: for landmarks and faction strategy
Ingress uses real-world points of interest as part of a contest between two factions. It is a different style of outdoor game, with an emphasis on territory and cooperation. Check the current local map and community before planning an outing around it. A game marker never overrides access rules.

A ten-minute check before committing
- Open the official store on your own Australian account and check device support, age requirements and permissions.
- Read which actions need location, motion or background access. Only enable what you understand and want.
- Set a purchase limit, including subscriptions and event tickets if offered. Free installation is not a promise that all content is free.
- Check whether the nearby game locations are accessible at the time you plan to visit.
- Try a short session before arranging a group outing. Keep phones away while driving, cycling or crossing roads, and stop safely to interact.
Want an outdoor game without another app?
Our original photo scavenger hunt gives adults a set of observation challenges and a free printable. For hidden physical containers or city riddles, use our separate treasure-hunt comparison. These are different activities, so choose the experience before choosing the software.
Robin Hood is still in development. We're inviting pilot interest, not offering a live Pokémon GO alternative or a paid rewards membership.
